Farewell Lou Scheimer

Checking through the blogosphere today, I saw the news about the death of Filmation founder and frequent voiceover artist Lou Scheimer on the Space1970 blog. Filmation was part of my childhood from Fat Albert to Batman to He-Man and beyond. There was imagination and wonder behind the limited animation and friendly life lessons that went across my tv screen. So farewell, Lou. Thanks for making my childhood a bit more fun.

Here's a great tribute I saw posted on YouTube:

Filmation has been part of the Amazing RPG Fun Pad over the years.

In 2011 I had several weeks of Filmation Friday. You can see them all here. I may have to restart this...

To end these thoughts, as I said in my very first post:

From Fulci...

to Filmation,

I hope you enjoy my irregularly updated blog!

Fulci's Zombie From A Torg Perspective

[There are some spoilers for Zombie here and Torg geek talk. You've been warned!]

When I was on vacation in late August there wasn't much on Digital TV in Winneconne, so I was watching some horror DVDs on a rainy day. I had also got some old Torg novels & short story collections for a dollar a piece at the Chimera Hobby Shop in Appleton. After watching Lucio Fulci's Zombie, it struck me that Zombie could be seen in a Torg light very easily, particularly the realm of Orrorsh.

Because I always thought this cover was cool...

Here are some brief thoughts:

The horror originates on the distant tropical island of Matool. Although Orrorsh in canon Torg in centered in Indonesia and the Philippines, the tropical setting is very apt.

The boat that floated to New York from Matool is a floating hardpoint for the Orrorsh reality. Because the reality of New York is so overwhelming, it would be considered a Mixed Zone. The obese zombie that falls into the could be Possibility Rated.

Many of the Gothic tropes prevalent in Orrorsh can be seen: mad science, the obsession with knowledge, brushes of colonialism, zombies, lonely houses in the middle of the jungle surrounded by the unknown.

It seems that at the beginning of the film, the recently dead are reanimating. As Zombie goes on the dead become more violent and hungry. The reanimation of the older dead comes later in the movie, namely the cemetery scene.

Peter (Ian McCulloch) seems to be more able to kill the zombies as Zombie goes on. He is definitely a Storm Knight. The rest of the cast are Ords except maybe for the good Doctor Menard (Richard Johnson), who probably has some Corruption points too.

The final scene can be viewed different ways. You could go the typical zombie apocalypse route, but there's no possibilities to be harvested when zombies kill everybody. A more Torg approach is the fear of a zombie epidemic as Bryan (Al Cliver) slowly becomes a zombie on the boat. If I remember right, the classic "zombies are taking over" voiceover at the end was part of the American version of Zombie.

The legendary Zombie/Shark battle can appreciated by fans of ANY RPG!

B-Movie Monday: Rambo Rip-Offs

With the 4th of July only 3days away I thought we would look at some of the more interesting rip-offs, er I mean tributes of Rambo. The quintessential misunderstood Vietnam vet character first hit the screens in First Blood and soon the shelves were full of similar heroes. Filmmakers both foreign and domestic jumped on the bandwagon. Not exactly my B-Movie cup of tea, but they are a part of the Bs too.

And if that wasn't strange enough they even made a 65 episode cartoon featuring Rambo and "The Force of Freedom"...

[Space Princess] Lt. Cali Mitchell & Ursus, Son of Hercules

Among the more unique Mercenaries that frequent the Free World of Kronos are Lt.Calpurnia "Cali" Mitchell, of the Terran Expeditionary Corps, Retired and her mate Ursus, Son of Hercules, Slayer of the Martian Cyclops.

Cali is a third generation bionically enhanced solider who was forcibly removed from exploratory service. She terminated the rest of her squad that declared themselves gods of a backwater planet and began a reign of terror. The service agreed to leave her alone but there are those in the TEC who want revenge.

Ursus, Son of Hercules is one of the Heraclade, a human offshoot who claim direct decent from the Greco-Roman demigod Hercules (Heracles). Both male and female are strong and brawl at the least provocation. Ursus is known as the Slayer of the Martian Cyclops after he prevented the resurrection of the evil buried under the Martian Polar Wastes.

For missions that are in more open arenas Ursus and Cali are often joined by Ursus' childhood pet Victor, a rare kuranmord, a lion-like predator that usually rampages on Metallic Deathworlds. Ursus found Victor when he was a cub, and the two bonded over countless battles. He adores Cali just as much, and many an intruder has found out that Victor doesn't sleep when they do...

Cali and Ursus met during an inconvenient temporal crisis, and their first brawl raged in a world city for two days. After it was broken up, Cali brought Ursus a drink. They kept getting hired by the same employers and grew closer as a result. What the pair lack in wisdom and social graces they make up for endurance and righteous rage.

B-Movie Monday Is Back! (On A Tuesday...)

My blogging vacation is over!

Oh I have read plenty of your blogs, yet I must admit I just didn't have the gumption to write anything recently. But now I am coming out of my self-imposed exile slowly but surely. Here and now B.Movie Monday rises from the grave!

Here are some trailers. Gotta get back on the bike! Ciao!

Cartoon Action Hour Season 3 Kickstarter: The Home Stretch

It's like the title says: less than 72 hours until the end of the Cartoon Action Hour Season 3 Kickstarter. As someone who doesn't back as many Kickstarters as I would like, this is one I have followed with great interest for a simple reason:
I really love the concept of Cartoon Action Hour. A roleplaying game designed to emulate 80s action cartoons.
Cynthia Celeste Miller created a game that I always wanted to and did a better job than I would have. If the Kickstarter had just made the initial goal of $4500, I'd be a happy man. As of today the total pledged is nearing $15,000. I pledged $25 for a pdf of the rules and a print copy too. As everyone knows, the sweet spot of a Kickstarter is hitting the stretch goals ans seeing what treasures can be unearthed. Many stretch goals have been passed already, and there's more to break in these final hours.

Why not check out the Kickstarter page (click the picture above for the link) and check it out. A tenspot ($10) will get you a pdf of the rules when completed, in addition to some sweet swag. Swag like more art and material in the rules. Mini cartoon series guides written by some of the great names in gaming including Steve Long, Shane Hensley, and John Wick. They even got 80s cartoon legends Flint Dille and Buzz Dixon to contribute material for the game: but only if the stretch goals are met!

Every time I've dealt with Spectrum Games, they've always been decent.  Here's to finishing up this Kickstarter strong!

[Cartoon Action Hour Season 2] Investigator Traloc and Captain Vix Rezlor (With Bonus Stuff!)

The Cartoon Action Hour Season 3 Kickstarter running wild, and one of the new stretch goals is the MotU-esque  The Complete Guide to Warriors of the Cosmos (at the $12,500 level)  I wanted to share some characters I created for the Cartoon Action Hour Season 2 version of the rules. They haven't seen the light of day since 2009 so lets crack open the packaging and dig right in!

Back to 2009....

Recently I ordered a copy of Cartoon Action Hour Season 2 (CAH S2) from the fine folks at Spectrum Games. This new edition of their 80s cartoon roleplaying game is a great revamp. It has streamlines character creation and utilizes a make it yourself trait system that is extremely flexible.

I created a character for the new rules. The CAH S2 book comes with three ready-made cartoon series: Transbots (Transformers), Strikeforce Freedom (G.I. Joe), and the setting I chose, Warriors of the Cosmos (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe). The CAH S2 Playset here gives you a brief background of the setting. So without further ado I give you:

Investigator Traloc
“Loyal Lizard Centaur Detective of Shadestar”

Yeah  it's a Zoat.

Quick Bio: Traloc is a member of a race of lizard centaurs known as the Xoanon. They are refugees from another dimension that settled in Iconia a century ago. The Xoanon live in small communities scattered throughout Iconia. They are usually a reclusive people, but several of the Xoanon have entered the service of the kingdoms in which they reside. They cannot be changed into goop zombies, so Nekrottus usually imprisons them or forces them to work in one of his pet projects.

Traloc’s family lived in the Kingdom of Shadestar, in a small village near the royal lands. He grew up an inquisitive child, and became renowned for his prowess at solving puzzles. As he grew older, Traloc left his village and entered the Shadestar Guard. He soon became the personal detective for the new queen, a young woman named Noblara.

When Nekrottus attacked Shadestar, Traloc helped fight, but was captured by the Blackskull Empire. He was among those sent to the Castle Suspended, a prison run by the disgraced former Shadestar Guard Captain Rezlor. A raid by the Guardians of Iconia freed Traloc and his fellow prisoners. With Noblara’s support, he offered his services to King Rastor and the people of Haven. Today Traloc uses both his brains and his brawn to fight for the freedom of Iconia.

Appearance: Traloc is a Xoanon of average height (five feet tall) and length (four feet long). His upper torso is humanoid, and his lower body is similar to a small rhino with a long tail at the end. Traloc’s scales are green, with shades of gray here and there. His face is lizard like with no nose and eyes that seem to notice everything. When at official functions he wears a blue sash with his family sigils and symbols of his deeds. He always carries a mace given to him by his father when he became a member of the Shadestar Guard.

Factoids: “Former member of the Shadestar Guard” ”Uses both brains and strength to solve cases” ”Cannot be bought” ”One of the few Xoanon who leave their villages” ”Loyal to Noblara”

Subplots: Archenemy (Captain Rezlor), Vow (To help free his people)

Traits: Xoanon Mace 4 [Enhancer +2, Accessory], Tail Slap 3 [Enhancer +2], Trample 5 [Enhancer +3, Disadvantage (Must make a running start)], Scaly Skin 2, Shadestar Guard Detective 4, Xoanon Lore 1, Stamina 3, Brawling 3, Strong 3, Inconvenient Size 2X.

Oomph 2, Threshold 10, Battle Rating 5

Okay, you got me. Investigator Traloc is a Zoat. I just had to do that. Once you have a general idea of what you want, character creation is pretty easy. It does have some of the same daunting nature of a “make your own trait” system. It emulates the chosen genre well, and that is always a plus.

One of my earlier entries was a new character for Cartoon Action Hour Season 2. Here is the enemy of that character, Captain Vix Rezlor.

Captain Vix Rezlor
“Jailer of the Blackskull Empire”

Captain Vix Rezlor played by American Flagg by Howard Chaykin
Quick Bio: Vix Rezlor was one of the most decorated members of the Shadestar Guard. The youngest person ever to hold the rank of Captain, he built the Guard under his command into a force to be reckoned with. Vix was well considered by Queen Noblara herself, and was in love with her. His only flaw was a prejudice against non-humanoids. It was slight at first, but soon it grew in intensity.

This began to color Vix’s interactions with both the Shadestar Guard and the people he protected. Seeds of resentment grew when his efforts to “streamline and improve” the Guard were blocked by concerned parties. Vix’s frustration grew to a boiling point. The final straw was the placing of Traloc, a Xoanon guardsman, as Noblara’s personal detective. In his mind Shadestar and Noblara betrayed him, giving something that belonged to him to someone that was beneath him.

When the Blackskull Empire invaded Shadestar, Vix offered his services to Nekrottus. The knowledge that he provided was a great factor in the fall of Shadestar. As a reward, Nekrottus has made Vix Rezlor the main Jailer of the Blackskull Empire. The only blot on his record is the fall of the Castle Suspended, his greatest jail. This is just one more reason for Vix to finish Traloc off once and for all.

Appearance: Vix Rezlor is a handsome dark haired man with an air of confidence about him. He usually dresses all in black with his silver Chain Gun at his side. The Chain Gun looks like an average laser, but it shoots out force chains which can be used to bind or trip Captain Rezlor’s opponents.

Factoids: “Dislikes non-humanoids” ”One of the Betrayers of Shadestar” ”Efficient commander of men” ”Clever designer of jails” ”Loyal to Nekrottus”

Subplots: Archenemy (Traloc), Mental Hang-Up (Prejudiced against Non-Humanoids)

Traits: Jailer 4, Loyalty 3, Tactical Genius 4, Handsome 3, Agile 3, Sword 4 [Enhancer +2, Accessory], Chain Gun 6 [Enhancer +3, Snare, Advantage (Can only be used by Captain Rezlor), Accessory], Former Shadestar Guard Captain 3, By the Book 1x, Competitive 1x

Threshold 10, Battle Rating 6

Note: Captain Rezlor’s prejudice comes into play in the 80s cartoon style. He is polite to everyone he meets accepts non-humanoids (anything that looks too different from humans). To them he has a condescending and short manner. His prejudice also leads Captain Rezlor to underestimate non-humanoids, which can lead to his defeat. Nekrottus knows of his prejudice and usually has him work with henchmen like Shadow Queen, Gatlyna, and Eye-Catcher.

Bonus #1: Rezlor’s Prison Guards

The prison guards of the Blackskull Empire are trained to keep their charges in Nekrottus’ jails. They have a tendency to work better with Nekrottus’ minions than the ordinary guards.

Battle Rating: 1
Goon Modifiers: Ensnare, Natural Born Followers

Bonus #2: A New Vehicle!

Kaptur Karavan

Description: This massive treaded battlewagon was designed to transport dangerous prisoners throughout the Blackskull Empire. The massive claws on the side can grab unwary Guardians and place them in a holding zone. The zone has a field that freezes the prisoner!

Traits
: Massive Hull 7, Prisoner Area 5, All Terrain Treads 5, Stun Blasts 8 [Enhancer +4], Side Claws 6 [Enhancer +3, Snare, Area, Situational Setback-2 (When the Karavan takes two Setback Tokens)], Slow 1x, Hard to Repair 2x, Freeze Field 6 [Enhancer +3, Snare, Disadvantage (Only Works on Prisoners in Prison Area), Fickle]

Subplots
: none

[Toon T-Days] Dash Raygun, Rocket Ranger

Sorry it's a day late. Must of took a wrong turn at Albuquerque...

Welcome to a new edition of Toon T-Days! Here is a Rocketeer-type character to throw at players in an Atomic Monster Theater (Tooniversal Tour Guide p 13-24) game. Yeah, he may have more shticks than the players. but won't that make it that much more fun to make him Fall Down?

Dash Raygun, Rocket Ranger

Description: Dash Raygun is a dashingly handsome 6-foot tall human wearing a classic rocket ranger jet suit. Most of the time he wears a protective helmet, but Dash likes the ladies to see how handsome he is. Dash never does anything quietly, and likes to be in the spotlight. He hates aliens but likes giant monsters, and will only attack them if they attack him. Dash is called in when things get out of hand. He wears a Jet Pack (Drive Vehicle roll -2, TTG170) that lets him fly into action. Dash's natural enemies are aliens and science run amok! He has Secret Decoder Rings, a ray gun (1d+2 damage), and. unlimited root beer in his Back Pocket.

Beliefs &  Goals: I am here to save the day! Never pass up the chance to get in front of a camera and show the people the amazing world of science! Aliens need to be defeated at all costs. Get the military to leave the giant monsters alone. It's not their fault! Have plenty of stories and decoder rings for the kids. I hear something... DASH INTO DAAANNNGERR!!!

Cartoon Action Hour Season 3 Kickstarter Starts May 3

On May 3 the fine folks at Spectrum Games are starting another Kickstarter, this time for the new edition of Cartoon Action Hour! I've always had a soft spot for this RPG because Cynthia Celeste Miller made the game I always wanted to make: a tribute to the toys and cartoons of the 80s. And the folks at Spectrum did this with some fine work through 2 editions and several sourcebooks.

The other thing is that every time I dealt with anyone from Spectrum Games they were always friendly and decent. I've bought a bunch of product from Spectrum Games. There's a lesson there...

Check out the Cartoon Action Hour Season 3 Kickstarter draft page at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/800609645/1515674165?token=d22e83e1 for the current info. Here's hoping funding goes well for this fun game.

[Toon T-Days] The Phantom of Granny's Old Opry

Hello again and welcome to another Toon T-Days! The Phantom of Granny's Old Opry is based off a character I created over 15 years ago when I ran a "Monster Mash"-type scenario named the Phantom of the Opry. Little did I know that there was not only several songs, but a horror movie host also called the Phantom of the Opry. So out of respect for them, but here is my renamed version.

The Phantom of Granny's Old Opry

Description: The Phantom of the Opry is a 6 1/2 foot tall humanoid horse who wears Western clothes  and a bandit's mask. When the Phantom was young, all he wanted to do was sing at the Granny's Old Opry.  While the Phantom could play any instrument unfortunately he was among the worst singers in the Tooniverse! Convinced that his lack of singing talent was the result of sabotage, the Phantom of the Opry decided to go underground and make sure that no other man would ever sing in the Opry. He does have a soft spot the pretty ladies, and will often help them become a star! He carries rope, a pistol, and a copy of "1001 Needlessly Complex Traps" in his Back Pocket. His natural enemies are anybody who says he can't sing and other male singers. And no one knows why he wears the mask either,,,

Beliefs & Goals: Ah should be tha one singin on that there stage. It was sabotage, I tell you! My voice is a much better than y'all give me credit for. Help the purty women sing but don't let them see yor face, and put there worthless beaus in a trap they'll never get out of. Granny's Old Opry is mine and I knows where all the hidin' places are. Never let them take off the mask!

[Toon T-Days] Albert the Alligator

For the first installation of Toon T-Days, I present a reconstruction of one of the first Toon characters I ever created. This character was built as a starting character according to the rules in the Toon Deluxe Edition rulebook pages 18 to 50.

Albert the Alligator

Description: This well dressed 6 foot tall alligator is always dressed in the finest clothes he can find. Albert loves to cook and eat and often finds ways to do both. He tries to be courteous and polite but when someone pushes him to far, Albert loses his cool and shows them he was can brawl like his uncles! Albert carries a frying pan, a cookbook, and utensils in his Back Pocket. His naturals enemies are hunters and people who criticize his cooking.

Beliefs & Goals: Just because you was born in the swamp doesn't mean you can't dress up well! I am a great cook who can make a feast out of anything. Search out fine food and fun times. People who can't appreciate that deserve to be Boggled! Oh, you want some? Uncle Jean Claude showed me this move, and it'll hurt!

Introducing Toon T-Days!

I decided I will not be doing the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge. I'd love too, but I just don't have the focus for it yet. But the pondering of  maybes has inspired:

Toon T-Days at the Amazing RPG Fun Pad! Cause there just ain't enought stuff on the Internet dedicated to Toon the Cartoon Roleplaying Game.

On either Tuesday or Thursday (or maybe BOTH if I'm particularly inspired!) I will present some material for Steve Jackson Games' Toon . It may be a character or three, a small adventure, some gear from across the Tooniverse or whatever tickles the weird portion of my brain. So prepare to be boggled with Toon T-Days starting sometime next week.

Toon T-Day is brought to you by your friends at Ace. Ace. If it's not from us, you deserve what you get!

I May Do The Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

Hello again long time no see!

Just thinking that I may do the ongoing Blogging from A to Z April Challenge. I am not definite about this yet. I'm thinking of doing something for either the Toon RPG (Steve Jackson Games) or the Ghostbusters RPG (West End Games). Both dead games, but both very fun games. Right now I am leaning toward Toon, but I'm still pondering my options.

From The Past: My Random GURPS Campaigns

I was, for most of the 90's, I was a big GURPS 3rd Edition fan, and am stil very fond of the rules. I even joined a Amateur Press Alliance dedicated to GURPS called All of the Above and was a member for almost a decade. Fellow AotA member Brett Slocum recently mentioned his nifty GURPS Random Campaign Generator and posted some of his old campaigns on his blog. I decided to post some of the campaign ideas I posted on the Campaign Generator. These are only edited for spelling, grammar and formating. And check out the Generator for a lot of great character and campaign ideas.

A Different Kind of Magick
(Castle Falkenstein, Psionics, Fantasy Folk)

Investigations into an untapped reservoir of Magick leads to the discovery of a race of lizard men who have tapped the powers of the mind to dwell in New Europa. Will they join the Second Compact or fall under the iron fist of Prussia?

 Autoduel: The Conflict
(Undead, Autoduel, Vampire: The Masquerade)

Vampiric autoduelists battle in the dark highways of the nations for money, glory and blood.

It gets a little confusing. . .
(Illuminati University, Mage: The Ascension, International Super Teams)

Take two IST Teams on vacation, add a field trip lead by the Dean of C. T. H. U. L. H. U. , stir in a vortex caused by a Sons of Ether experiment gone awry, and an Umbral spirit who calls himself the Jester of Naught who likes to play games. Then it gets really weird. . .

B-Movie Monday: Bollywood Horror!

Hello and welcome to B-Movie Monday. Submitted for your approval today are some horror movie trailers from India. I've watched a couple of Indian horror movies, and I've found them to be interesting viewing. A Quick Vision of Vanth...

Two Rogue Steel Chariots attack an Old Terran Morphibot

The many mountain ranges of Vanth are dangerous to those unfamiliar with the terrain. Among the newest means of travel are the amazing Steel Chariots of the Iron Dwarf King. These cyaborgic wonders are crafted of a unique blend of orichalcum, mithril, and dilithium to withstand the extreme environmental and intelligent dangers of the mountains. Sometimes the control mind goes mad and a Steel Chariot rampages throughout the land destroying anything organic in its path and converting usable materials into fuel and ammunition. The Iron Dwarf King dispatches his Retrieval Engineer Corps to either subdue or destroy the errant construct before secrets are discovered.
